Stainton Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Lincoln, Stainton Wood delivers what you want from a forest - tall trees, quiet paths, and the kind of peace that comes from being away from traffic noise. It's not vast, so you won't be wandering for hours getting lost, but that's rather the point. The woodland floor is soft underfoot even when it's been raining, and the canopy does the job of keeping things cool on warmer days.

Walkers will find this worth an hour or so of their time. There are various routes through, though nothing particularly steep or technical - fine for families with kids who can manage a bit of uneven ground. If you're staying at Lincolnshire Lanes Camp down the road, this is exactly the sort of spot to burn off some energy without needing to drive anywhere.

There's nothing fancy here - no visitor centre, no café, no admission fee as far as we can tell. Just woodland as it should be. The paths are maintained well enough and it feels safe year-round. Spring's lovely when the woodland floor comes alive with growth, though autumn when the light filters through differently is perhaps more atmospheric.

Don't expect dramatic vistas or rare wildlife sightings. What you get is a clean, straightforward walk in decent woodland within easy reach of Lincoln. It's the sort of place that works because it doesn't try too hard.
