Stanage Pole

A weathered stone pillar standing alone on the Derbyshire moorland, Stanage Pole marks a centuries-old boundary between parishes. It's not much to look at - honestly, it's easy to walk straight past it - but that's rather the point. This is where walkers come for the landscape, not the monument itself.

The pole sits on high ground with views sweeping across the Hope Valley towards the gritstone edges that make this corner of Derbyshire so compelling. You'll spot it on the Pennine Way if you're doing a longer trek, or tackle it as a shorter moorland ramble from Hope. It takes perhaps twenty minutes to reach from the nearest car parks, depending on your route.

Walkers and fell runners get the most from this spot - it's got that satisfying ring to it, a real waypoint rather than a destination in itself. Families with young children might find the approach a bit exposed if the weather turns; the moorland offers no shelter. The best time is clear weather, obviously, when you can actually see the view the pole's meant to overlook.

Combine it with a proper walk across the edges or down to Edale, and you've got a solid day. The pole itself is free and accessible year-round, though winter mud can be grim.
