Stannon South

Out on the moorland between Bodmin and the coast sits Stannon South, a Bronze Age stone circle that's genuinely easy to miss if you're not looking for it. There are around twenty stones still standing, weathered and grey against the Cornish sky, arranged in that familiar ring that Bronze Age people left scattered across this landscape five thousand years ago. You can walk right up to them, touch the stones, stand in the middle and wonder what ceremonies happened here when these were freshly dressed.

It's one for archaeology buffs and walkers rather than anyone expecting somewhere showy. There's no visitor centre, no car park, no explanation boards - just stones in a field. That's rather the point. You get a genuine sense of how these monuments sit in the ordinary working countryside, not cordoned off in some heritage park. Families with older kids who don't mind a moderate walk will find it worthwhile, particularly if you're combining it with a day on Bodmin Moor itself.

The walk to reach it is straightforward enough, though you'll need decent boots if it's been wet. Allow about thirty minutes from the nearest road access, depending on which approach you take. Free to visit, obviously. Best time is probably spring or early summer when you can actually see where you're putting your feet and the light's decent for photographs.

If you're basing yourself at Camp De Lank or Rosebud Farm, both within easy distance, Stannon South makes a proper half-day adventure combined with exploring the wider moorland. Don't go expecting a destination in itself - go as part of a bigger walking day, and you'll get far more from it.
