Stapleford Miniature Railway

There's something about miniature railways that brings out the kid in everyone, and Stapleford's version - tucked away near Oakham in Leicestershire - delivers exactly what it promises without pretension. The narrow-gauge track winds through the grounds with proper little steam and diesel locomotives pulling open carriages, and you genuinely feel you're on a working railway, just one where your knees are practically at chin level.

It's a hands-on sort of place. You board an actual train, trundle along at a proper pace (not some glacial tourist crawl), and the drivers clearly know their stuff - there's real engineering happening here, not just a fairground ride. Families with children aged four to twelve will get the most from it; younger kids might find the novelty wears thin after a couple of circuits, whilst teenagers usually can't be bothered. Adults who grew up with trains, though, often spend longer than expected poking about and asking questions.

Allow a couple of hours to avoid rushing. The setting's pleasant enough - open fields rather than dramatic scenery - and it integrates well into a broader Leicestershire holiday. You're close enough to Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park and Eye Kettleby Lakes that you could easily slot this in as a half-day activity between lake sessions or countryside walks. Admission is modest, and it's the sort of place that rewards turning up without massive expectations and leaving genuinely pleased you went.
