Stepping Stones

You'll find these stones crossing a shallow stream in the Gower Peninsula, just outside Swansea - they're the sort of thing you either spot on a walk and think brilliant, or you actively seek out if you're after a bit of a scramble. The stepping stones themselves are nothing fancy: ancient slabs of rock placed across water, worn smooth by centuries of feet and weather. What makes them worth the trip is the setting. The stream cuts through moorland and woodland, and crossing them feels properly adventurous even though it takes about thirty seconds. Kids absolutely love this - there's something magnetic about stones in water.

It works best as part of a longer Gower walk rather than a destination in itself. Allow twenty minutes if you're just crossing back and forth, longer if you're exploring the wider paths around Nicholaston and Oxwich. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters. Early morning or late afternoon light here is genuinely lovely, which matters because the stream itself isn't dramatic - you're here for the excuse to be outside, not for jaw-dropping views.

If you're staying at Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park or Nicholaston Farm, this is within easy reach and fits neatly into a morning ramble. Families with children aged six upwards tend to get the most from it; younger ones might find the walk to reach it tiresome. There's no café or facilities nearby, so bring water. Free, obviously - it's just rocks and water.
