Stob Coire Raineach

The walk up Stob Coire Raineach from Appin is proper solid hillwalking rather than a casual stroll, so don't underestimate it. You're looking at a genuine Scottish peak - 812 metres of it - that sits in the shadow of its taller neighbour Stob Coire an Albannaich, but holds its own views entirely. The ascent is relentless in sections, climbing through moorland and scree that'll test your boots and lungs, but the reward is a summit that feels earned.

What makes it worth the slog is the vantage point over Loch Creran and towards the Morven range. On a clear day - and you'll want to time it right because cloud rolls in fast here - you can see right across to the Islands. The peak itself is rocky, wind-exposed, and unforgiving if weather turns. Allow a full five to six hours return from the standard starting point, and go early.

This is walkers' territory. Family groups with small children will find it punishing; teenagers who like a proper challenge will love it. The nearest base is Appin itself, but Creagan Station Tourers just 1.5 miles away makes a logical parking spot if you're staying over. Oban Camping and Caravanning Club Site is also close at 2.9 miles. Winter ascents require experience and winter kit - don't assume it's a summer-only proposition. It's free, obviously, being a Scottish mountain. Just bring proper gear and respect the weather.
