About Strathisla Distillery
The tour takes you through the whole process: from the malting floors where they still turn barley by hand, through the massive copper stills (the tallest in Scotland, they'll tell you), to the warehouses where the magic actually happens. It's not flashy, and that's precisely why it works. The guides know their stuff and won't bore you with marketing nonsense.
You'll get the most out of this if you actually care about how whisky gets made. It's not a theme park - there's no gift shop theatre here, just proper production. Families with restless kids under ten might struggle with the pace, but anyone genuinely interested will spend a solid two hours absorbed. The tasting at the end is decent, though not revelatory.
The distillery runs Tuesday to Saturday through autumn, then switches to Wednesday-Saturday from November. Allow ninety minutes minimum, longer if you're chatty with the guides. Keith itself is unremarkable, but both Hillhead Hideaways and Cairnty Lodges sit within easy reach if you're basing yourself in the area for a few days of distillery hopping. Well worth the detour if you're serious about whisky, less so if you're just ticking boxes.
