Strathisla Distillery Visitor Centre

The moment you walk into Strathisla, you're hit with that unmistakable smell of working whisky - all grain and oak and years of distilling. It's Scotland's oldest operating distillery, established in 1786, and they've kept the traditional copper pot stills and wooden tun room largely unchanged. You can actually see the whole process happen here, which beats most visitor centres that just show you videos and gift shops.

The tour takes you through the mash house, fermentation halls, and the stillhouse itself - proper industrial but somehow intimate. They'll pour you a dram at the end, and it's genuinely good stuff, not the tourist-baiting nonsense you get elsewhere. Allow a good two hours if you want to do the full experience without rushing.

Keith, the nearest town, sits right on the Speyside whisky trail, so you could easily spend a weekend hopping between distilleries. What makes Strathisla different is it feels like an actual working place, not a theme park. Families won't find it tedious - kids are usually fascinated by the scale of the equipment and the nose-watering vapours coming from the stills.

If you're staying at Hillhead Hideaways just down the road, you're well positioned. The glamping at Cairnty is also close by if you fancy something with hot tubs. Opening hours are 10am to 5pm most days, but check ahead. Admission details aren't entirely clear online, so ring before you go.
