Streaks Pot - Top Entrance

The entrance to Streaks Pot sits high above Buxton, and it's one of those Yorkshire limestone caves that rewards a proper scramble to reach it. You're looking at a vertical shaft descent into a system that'll take anything from a couple of hours to a full day depending on how far you want to go - it's genuinely underground. This isn't a tourist cave with handrails and gift shops; it's the real deal, which means you need caving experience, proper gear, and ideally a guide who knows where the unstable bits are.

The landscape around here is spectacular anyway - moorland and drystone walls as far as you can see - but the cave itself is for cavers rather than casual visitors. If you're camping at Dale Farm or any of the sites clustered around Castleton, Streaks Pot makes sense as a day trip if you know what you're doing. The walk to the top entrance alone is worth it for the views across the Peak District.

Wintry weather makes access tricky, and the system floods after heavy rain, so plan accordingly. Don't just turn up expecting to wander in - local caving groups can advise on conditions and whether you've got the skills. It's brilliant if you're serious about caving, less so if you're hoping for a casual family outing.
