Wardlow Hay Cop

Standing 427 metres above sea level, this limestone hill offers one of the finest views across the Peak District without the crowds that plague the more famous tors. The walk up from Wardlow village is steady rather than steep, taking about 45 minutes through typical Derbyshire drystone wall country. Once you reach the triangulation point at the summit, the panorama stretches from Kinder Scout in the north to the White Peak plateau rolling away south towards Bakewell.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from Wardlow Hay Cop, especially those who appreciate a proper hill walk without the tourist masses. The path is well-defined but can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Early morning or late afternoon light shows off the landscape beautifully.

From Buxton, it's a straightforward drive through Tideswell to reach the starting point. Allow half a day if you're combining it with a pub lunch in one of the nearby villages. The area works brilliantly as a base for exploring the Peak District, with several holiday parks within easy reach including Chatsworth Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and Greenhills Holiday Park. Dale Farm Rural Campsite is particularly close if you prefer a quieter, adults-only site. It's free to walk, naturally, though parking in Wardlow village requires a bit of consideration for locals.
