Peters Stone

The walk up to Peters Stone rewards you with one of those views that makes you understand why people move to Derbyshire. It's a proper peak, nothing too technical, but the climb from Buxton does work your legs a bit.

You get a stone marker at the top - the sort of thing that's been photographed to death on social media, but fair enough, it's a decent focal point. The real draw is the panorama across the surrounding hills. On a clear day you can see for miles across the High Peak. On a misty one, frankly, it's a bit of a letdown, so timing matters.

The walk itself takes a couple of hours from town, so it's worth combining with other routes in the area rather than treating it as a standalone afternoon. Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might struggle with the final push, and you'll have bored complaints halfway up if they're not keen walkers.

Admission is free - it's a natural feature, not a managed attraction. No facilities up there, so bring water and something to eat if you plan to linger. The nearest campsite is Derbyshire Hills, just 1.5 miles from Buxton, which makes a handy base. Lathkill Wild Campsite a bit further out offers a quieter option if you want less of the holiday park atmosphere.

Honestly, it's worth the detour if you're already hiking the High Peak, but don't go out of your way just for the stone. The walk itself is the thing.
