Sutton Walls (camp)

The earthwork rings at Sutton Walls are what's left of an Iron Age fortress - concentric defensive ditches and ramparts that once protected whoever lived here around 2,000 years ago. You're looking at lumps and bumps in a field, essentially, but if you know what they are, they're genuinely compelling. The site sits just outside Hereford, accessible to walk around without any faffing about with gates or admission fees.

It's not a destination that'll hold your attention for hours, but it's worth a dedicated 45 minutes if you're into archaeology or simply enjoy the quiet satisfaction of standing where Iron Age people stood. The views across the landscape give you a sense of why this spot was defensible - good sightlines, elevated enough to matter. Don't come expecting reconstructions or interpretation boards; this is archaeology in its plainest form.

Histor enthusiasts and walkers will get the most from it. Kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're already interested in forts and ancient Britain. If you're camped at one of the sites nearby - Cuckoo's Corner or Kingfisher Meadow are both within a couple of miles - it makes an easy morning walk before heading into Hereford proper. Combine it with the cathedral and riverside walks and you've got a solid half-day sorted. Spring or autumn are best for visibility and for avoiding the summer crowds that never really materialize here anyway. Free, accessible, and honest about what it is.
