Swindon Village Park

The moment you push through the gate at Swindon Village Park near Cheltenham, you're in proper countryside - meadows, woodland, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you left the city. This nature reserve isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres and gift shops. It's the real thing: open grassland where wildflowers do their thing, tree-lined paths where you might spot birds, and enough space to actually breathe.

Walkers will get the most from it. There's something deeply satisfying about spending an hour or two following the trails without encountering hordes of people. It's not dramatic or famous - no waterfall views or ancient ruins - but that's rather the point. This is where you go when you want to switch off without the performance.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Severnside Boat & Caravan is exceptional if you can get in there - Swindon Village Park works perfectly as a morning walk before heading into Cheltenham proper for lunch. Tewkesbury Abbey Caravan and Motorhome Club is close enough that it makes an easy leg-stretch, though Millavon Holiday Park offers better value if you're watching the budget.

The reserve is free to access, which alone makes it worth the detour. Allow a couple of hours to properly explore without rushing. Spring and early summer are when the wildflowers earn their keep, but honestly, any time works if you just want peace and quiet. Children won't be bored if they're the outdoorsy type; others might find it a touch underdeveloped.
