Taymouth Castle

The crumbling silhouette of Taymouth Castle rises from the Tay Valley near Pitlochry like something from a Gothic novel - all turrets and stone walls slowly being reclaimed by the landscape. This isn't some polished, manicured visitor attraction. It's genuinely eerie, especially in soft light, and that's precisely why it's worth the drive.

What you're looking at is a 19th-century castle built for the Campbell family, designed by William Atkinson and abandoned decades ago. The grounds are open to wander (check access locally before you go), and walking the overgrown estate feels like exploring an active ruin rather than a museum piece. The river views are proper lovely, and the sheer decay of the place has a strange appeal - photographers and history types especially get something out of it.

This isn't a sit-down-for-three-hours kind of stop. You'll get the measure of it in 45 minutes to an hour, unless you're really into Victorian architecture or want to hunt for good shots. Free to access, though facilities are non-existent, so come prepared.

It pairs well with a Pitlochry-based caravan holiday. Glengoulandie Camping & Caravanning, just 3.8 miles away, is genuinely excellent and highly rated - a proper base for exploring the valley. You can easily combine this with walks along the Tay, visits to Pitlochry itself, or pushing further into Perthshire. The castle is moody and atmospheric rather than conventionally beautiful, but that's exactly why people remember it.
