Ten Acre Lake

Ten Acre Lake sits just outside Doncaster, a proper working fishing spot that's surprisingly peaceful given how close it is to the town. It's what it says on the tin - a decent-sized body of water surrounded by woodland, where anglers come to catch carp, pike and roach. The lake has the kind of quiet, undisturbed feel that makes you wonder why more people don't know about it. You'll find a footpath running round the perimeter, so it works just as well for a walk as it does for spending an afternoon with a rod. The water reflects the sky nicely on clear days, and there's enough green space around it to let you breathe properly. If you're staying at Mooreacres - just over a mile away - this is a cracking spot for a morning walk before the fishermen get serious. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point. Families with kids won't find organised activities here, so children might get restless after twenty minutes or so unless they're genuinely interested in watching ducks or spotting wildlife. For walkers and fishing types, though, it's worth the trip. Allow an hour to walk the loop at a leisurely pace. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Best visited when it's not raining - the paths can get a bit boggy - and early morning or late afternoon when the light's best and the place feels even quieter.
