Tewit Hill

The walk up Tewit Hill from Clitheroe is short, sharp, and rewards you with proper views across the Ribble Valley. You're looking at maybe thirty minutes to the top if you're moving at a decent pace, though the final push is steep enough to make you feel like you've earned the panorama. On a clear day you can see right across Lancashire - Pendle Hill dominates to the east, and the landscape just sprawls out below you in layers of green and grey.

This isn't a technical climb. The path is well-trodden and straightforward, which means families with older kids and casual walkers will have no trouble with it. Younger children might find the gradient a bit much on the way down. Keen photographers should come late afternoon when the light hits the valley properly. In winter it can be muddy and slippery, so decent boots matter.

It's free, obviously - it's a hill. Allow an hour return if you're taking your time and actually looking at the view rather than just bagging another peak. In summer the heather catches nicely, though it's hardly dramatic.

For a holiday in the area, Tewit works best as a morning outing before heading to one of the nearby parks like Holgates Ribble Valley or Parkdean Resorts Todber Valley. It's close enough to Clitheroe that you're not wasting half your day driving, but far enough out that you feel like you've actually walked somewhere. Pair it with a wander round Clitheroe town itself and you've got a solid day sorted.
