Wooly Hill

The walk up Wooly Hill from Clitheroe is a proper little leg-stretcher - nothing dramatic, but the views across the Ribble Valley are worth the climb. It's the sort of peak that rewards you without punishing you. On a clear day you can see right across Lancashire's rolling countryside, and Pendle Hill dominates the skyline to the east, which gives you a real sense of where you are geographically.

This is absolutely one for walkers rather than sightseers who want to roll up by car. The ascent takes about 45 minutes from the town, and the paths are well-trodden without being overcrowded. Kids will manage it fine - it's steep in patches but nothing requiring scrambling gear. Families based at nearby Holgates Ribble Valley or Parkdean Resorts Todber Valley could easily do this as a morning outing before lunch.

The summit itself is modest - a cleared hilltop rather than some dramatic rocky pinnacle - but that's rather the point. You're here for the vantage point and the walk, not Instagram credentials. Bring something waterproof; Lancashire weather can turn within minutes, and exposed hilltops catch the wind early.

It works brilliantly as part of a broader walking holiday in the area. Combine it with the longer Pendle Hill walk, or use it as an appetiser if you're based at one of the caravan parks within a few miles of Clitheroe. Free to visit, obviously - it's a hillside. Allow the best part of two hours there and back if you're not rushing.
