The Cloud

The Cloud rises abruptly from the Staffordshire moorland near Congleton, a proper limestone hill that dominates the landscape for miles around. From the summit at 1,175 feet, you get views across the Peak District that stretch for ages on a clear day - moorland rolling away in every direction, with Macclesfield Forest off to one side and the higher peaks visible further out.

It's a straightforward walk up from the car park, takes about 45 minutes to the top if you're moving at a decent pace. The path gets steep in sections and can be boggy after rain, so proper boots are worth wearing. Once you're up there, the views more than make up for it. On a grey day it feels wild and exposed; in sunshine it's genuinely lovely.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a place to linger for hours - you're looking at two hours up and down, maybe three if you're dawdling - but the walk itself is satisfying and the vantage point makes it worth the effort. Kids who are reasonably fit will manage fine, though younger ones might find the steeper bits tedious.

Being so close to Congleton and just a few miles from several caravan parks - Rudyard Vale, Sky View, and the biker-friendly Avona Escapes are all within 4 miles - it works well as a half-day outing during a park holiday in the area. Pair it with a walk around Rudyard Lake and you've got a solid morning sorted.
