Bosley Reservoir

The walk around Bosley Reservoir catches you off guard with how much there is to it. This isn't some glorified puddle - it's a proper body of water straddling the Staffordshire and Cheshire border near Congleton, with a circuit that takes a good hour or so depending on your pace and how often you stop to look at things.

You get decent views across the water, and on a clear day it feels genuinely peaceful. The path is manageable for most abilities, though parts can get muddy after rain - wear proper boots. Birdwatchers will get something out of it, particularly if you catch the right season. Families with younger kids might find it a touch repetitive after the initial loop, but older children who actually enjoy walking will be fine.

The reservoir is free to access, which is the main thing. There's no entrance fee or visitor centre faffing about. Just turn up and get on with it. Timing-wise, visit when it's not raining sideways - the views matter here, and grey soup doesn't do them any favours.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Kiss Wood Cabins and Avona Escapes are barely ten minutes away - this makes an excellent half-day activity to break up the week. Pair it with a proper walk elsewhere in the Peak District foothills if you want more substance. On its own, it's worth an afternoon. Not spectacular, but solid.
