The Cockpit Stone Circle

A handful of weathered stones standing in a field just outside Penrith - that's the Cockpit Stone Circle. Nothing fancy, nothing reconstructed. Just Bronze Age rocks that have been here for roughly 4,000 years, which puts modern life in perspective when you're standing amongst them.

You'll find about a dozen stones arranged in a rough circle, some substantial, others mere stumps. The setting is genuinely atmospheric, especially on an overcast day when the Lake District hills loom in the distance. It's a proper walking destination rather than a tourist trap, the sort of place where you might have the stones entirely to yourself.

History enthusiasts will appreciate what this represents - evidence of ancient ritual and settlement in the region. For families, it's a bit of an acquired taste. Kids might find it underwhelming compared to more dramatic stone circles, though the walk to reach it and the stories you can tell them make it worthwhile. Walkers benefit most, honestly. It's an easy addition to a longer route exploring the area around Penrith.

The circle sits roughly a mile from Park Foot Holiday Park and within reasonable distance of Waterfoot Caravan Park and Ullswater Holiday Park if you're basing yourselves for a longer stay. There's no admission charge and no restrictions on visiting - it's freely accessible, though you'll want sturdy boots given the terrain. Allow twenty minutes or so to see it properly. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid any lingering tour groups, though frankly they're rare enough that you probably won't encounter anyone.
