The Grove

The Grove is a proper woodland walk just outside Diss, the sort of place that rewards a lazy afternoon rather than demanding your full schedule. You get mixed woodland - oak, ash, and plenty of evergreen - with enough footpaths to choose your own route without getting properly lost. The canopy's thick enough to feel sheltered even when the weather's turning, and there's a real sense of being away from things despite how close it is to town.

It's ideal for families with primary-school-aged kids who can manage uneven ground and don't need a visitor centre with hot chocolate. Walkers after a gentle two-hour loop will find it satisfying rather than demanding. The woodland types - people mad about birds or fungi - will clock species you might otherwise miss. If you're looking for riverside walks or dramatic vistas, this isn't it. It's intimate woodland, quiet, a place to notice things.

Free access, no gates, just turn up. Spring's lovely when the bluebells do their thing, but honestly autumn might be better - fewer midges, better light through the canopy, and you can actually see paths that vanish under ferns in summer. Allow two to three hours if you're in no rush.

If you're staying at Arthur's Retreat just down the road, it's an easy leg-stretch that breaks up a caravan holiday without demanding much planning. Diss itself has a proper high street and a good mere for a wander afterwards. The Grove doesn't need to be your day's main event - it's the thing you do in between other things.
