The Jungle

The Jungle near Oakham is a sprawling overgrown estate that's equal parts eerie and fascinating. What you're looking at is essentially a woodland area that's reclaimed a former property - nature's taken over completely, with trees growing through old structures and paths disappearing into thick vegetation. It's the sort of place that makes you understand why locals call it that. You wander through dense undergrowth, spot the remnants of what used to be here, and get properly lost in the quiet. There's no admission fee because there's nowhere official to pay. Just turn up and explore. Allow a couple of hours if you're the curious type, less if you spook easily. It's genuinely atmospheric rather than scary, though it does feel a bit like trespassing even when you're technically allowed. Families with older kids who like a bit of adventure will get a kick out of it - younger ones might find it too dark and overgrown. Summer's best for visibility, though autumn when the light's golden through the canopy is rather magical. The place works well if you're staying at Emily's Cut Camping nearby. It's an easy drive from there and breaks up a park holiday nicely. Not everyone's cup of tea - some find it depressing, others find it brilliant. You'll know which camp you're in pretty quickly.
