The Old Pale

Standing at just 230 feet above sea level, this modest sandstone ridge hardly counts as mountaineering, but The Old Pale offers surprisingly decent views across the Cheshire Plain for such a gentle climb. The summit sits within the eastern edge of Delamere Forest, making it an easy add-on to forest walks or cycling routes.

Expect a fairly straightforward walk through mixed woodland, with the final approach revealing glimpses of the Mersey valley and Manchester's distant sprawl on clear days. It's not exactly dramatic - this is Cheshire, after all - but walkers looking for a leg-stretch without serious effort will find it hits the spot. Families with older children could manage it comfortably, though toddlers might find the woodland paths a bit much.

The peak forms part of the longer Sandstone Trail, so serious hikers often bag it as part of a bigger day out. For holiday park visitors, it's a pleasant hour's diversion from Northwich and the surrounding caravan sites. Wild Shore Delamere and the other Delamere-area parks are all within easy striking distance, making this a decent rainy-day backup when the forest centre gets too crowded. Don't expect Instagram-worthy vistas, but it's a proper little climb that feels more substantial than the modest elevation suggests.
