The Roughs

The Roughs is a proper woodland walk just outside Haywards Heath, the sort of place where you actually feel like you've left suburbia behind even though you're barely ten minutes from the town centre. It's dense, atmospheric forest - all tall pines and dark earth underfoot, with paths that wind through without too much faffing about.

You're looking at maybe an hour or two here depending on how much you potter. The canopy's thick enough that it stays cool even on warm days, which is either brilliant or slightly gloomy depending on your mood. Kids won't get bored if they're the type who like spotting wildlife and climbing over fallen logs; it's less "theme park fun" and more "actual nature". There's something satisfying about the quiet of it.

The paths are manageable underfoot but it's not a manicured park experience - wear proper shoes. Free to wander, no entry fee that I'm aware of, and you can rock up whenever you fancy since it's just open forest.

If you're staying at Worth Forest Glamping down the road, this is absolutely worth building into a day out. It pairs nicely with other Sussex woodland walks, giving you proper forest immersion without requiring a long drive. The Haywards Heath area has decent cafes for post-walk coffee, though you won't find anything at The Roughs itself, so plan accordingly. It's the kind of place that doesn't make lists of "must-sees" but absolutely should.
