The RSPB shop at Carsington Water

The shop sits right at Carsington Water, a proper working reservoir just outside Ashbourne that's become one of the Midlands' best spots for birdwatching. It's run by the RSPB and stocks the usual suspects - field guides, binoculars, bird feeders, gifts - but what matters is that it's your launching point for exploring the water itself.

This isn't a destination on its own, to be honest. You're here because you're already watching birds or planning to. The reservoir draws serious numbers of waterfowl year-round: winter brings wigeon and pochard, spring sees passage warblers, summer's quieter but still worth a look. The shop staff know what's been spotted lately, which is genuinely useful.

If you're camped at Carsington Water Caravan and Motorhome Club or Carsington Fields just down the road, the walk to the shop and a circuit round the water fills a morning nicely. Bring binoculars. Bring a bird book. Don't expect much of the shop itself - it's small and functional. But the location is excellent. Early morning is best for birds; weekends get busy with families and walkers doing the loop.

Worth stopping by if you're into ornithology or just fancy a walk round water and reservoir-side paths. Not worth a special trip from Ashbourne if you're not interested in birds, but a solid add-on to a caravan holiday in the area.
