The Shire - Cafe & Gelateria

You won't find Frodo here, but the Tolkien references are all over the place at The Shire, a cafe and gelateria tucked into the Yorkshire countryside just outside York. It's the sort of spot that takes its theme seriously without tipping into theme park territory - think cosy woodland cafe vibes rather than costume characters and gift shop tat.

The real draw is the gelato. Proper Italian stuff, creamy and intense, with flavours that change seasonally. The cafe serves decent coffee and light bites, though honestly most people come for the ice cream and to wander the grounds. There's a bit of hobbit-hole aesthetic to the buildings and gardens, which feels earned rather than forced.

Families with younger kids will get a kick out of the Middle-earth theming, though anyone over ten might find it a touch laid-on. Adults will appreciate it more as a quiet spot to sit down with something cold and good. The location works well if you're glamping in the area - Yapham Holds Farmhouse Glamping and Bugthorpe Grange Glamping are both within easy reach, making it a decent afternoon escape from your site.
