The Spirit of St. Ives

Bronze figures stand frozen in conversation along the riverbank, their weathered faces turned towards the Great Ouse as if still discussing the day's catch. The Spirit of St. Ives sculpture captures a slice of medieval life - merchants, pilgrims and locals gathering where the old bridge once carried traffic between Cambridge and the north.

Created by Gordana Bonetti-Veale, these seven life-sized figures tell the story of St. Ives' importance as a medieval trading post. Each character represents a different walk of life, from the travelling merchant to the local farmer, all rendered in striking detail that invites closer inspection.

History enthusiasts will appreciate how the sculpture brings the town's past to life, though younger children might find the static display less engaging after a quick look. The riverside setting is lovely for a stroll, particularly on a clear day when the bronze catches the light beautifully.

It's a brief stop rather than a full afternoon out - fifteen minutes covers it unless you're particularly drawn to the historical significance. The sculpture sits right in St. Ives town centre, making it easy to combine with a walk along the river or a visit to the nearby All Saints Church.
