The Walled Garden

The walls here are proper high - built to trap warmth and keep out the Highland wind. Walking through the gate of The Walled Garden near Nairn feels like stepping into a different climate altogether. Inside, fruit trees trained against stone, vegetable beds that actually produce, and the kind of peace you don't get in the open countryside. It's a working garden, not a manicured showpiece, which makes it all the more genuine.

You're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour here unless you're a serious horticulturist, in which case you could spend twice that. The geometry of the beds, the way they've managed to grow things that shouldn't survive this far north - it appeals more to gardeners and quieter visitors than to families with restless kids. There's no café or gift shop nonsense, which is refreshing.

If you're camping at Barrow Campsite just down the road - and it's a solid spot - this works as a gentle morning walk before heading into Nairn proper for lunch. The Highland light here in summer is stunning, especially late in the day. Winter's a different story; the skeleton of the place has its own appeal, but spring and early summer are when you'll see what all the fuss is about. Ring ahead to check opening times before you go - it's not the kind of place with lengthy hours.
