The Waskerley Way. Hawkburn Head

The Waskerley Way is a former railway line turned walking and cycling route that runs for roughly 5 miles between Consett and Waskerley. Hawkburn Head marks one of the most dramatic stretches - a high moorland section where the path cuts through open country with proper views across County Durham. You're walking on the actual trackbed, so it's dead flat and easy underfoot, which is half the appeal.

It works brilliantly for families with younger kids or anyone who wants a proper walk without scrambling about on rough terrain. Cyclists love it too. The industrial heritage angle appeals to history types - this was the Consett Iron Company railway, closed in the 1980s, and you can still feel that working landscape around you. Allow two to three hours for a round trip from Consett town, depending on how far you fancy pushing on.

Winter can be bleak up here, honestly. Windswept and exposed. Spring through autumn is far better. The walk is free and accessible year-round. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Consett - Bonners Lodge or Village Green are both within a couple of miles - this makes an excellent day out without needing to trek far. Pair it with a mooch around Consett itself for the full picture. Not flashy, but genuine industrial archaeology on foot.
