About Thorneyhole Wood
This is walkers' territory, plain and simple. If your idea of a nice afternoon is a three-mile ramble without thinking too hard about navigation, you'll be content here. Families with younger kids might find the paths a bit muddy and unremarkable unless they're genuinely into spotting woodland birds or looking for fungi. Older children who can handle uneven ground and don't need constant stimulation will be fine.
The wood sits just outside Haltwhistle, making it a solid morning's activity if you're based at Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site or the considerably fancier Herding Hill Farm a few miles on. It's worth combining with a visit to Hadrian's Wall itself - you could knock out both in a day if you're energetic. The forest won't take you more than two hours to explore properly, so don't plan your whole day around it.
No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. Best visited in autumn when the canopy's thinner and you're not fighting through summer bracken. It's free, accessible, and honest - which is exactly what you want from a local wood.
