Standing at the centre of Hadrian's Wall country, this unassuming Northumberland market town claims to be Britain's geographical heart. Haltwhistle doesn't shout about its attractions - it just quietly gets on with being one of the best bases for exploring Rome's great northern frontier.

Walltown Crags offer some of the most dramatic views along the entire 84-mile wall, where the Roman stones rise and fall with the natural contours like a stone dragon's spine. The nearby Walltown Quarry provides fascinating geology for those who appreciate rock formations, while Poltross Burn Milecastle gives you a proper sense of how the Romans organised their border defences every Roman mile.

Beyond the obvious Roman attractions, Blenkinsopp Castle adds a medieval dimension to your explorations. The 14th-century ruins sit in a lovely spot, though they're more atmospheric than dramatically preserved. For those preferring woodland walks, Spadeadam Forest stretches for miles to the south - it's proper hiking country with clear paths and decent car parks.

The town itself is refreshingly normal. No tourist tat shops or overpriced Roman-themed cafes. Just a working market town that happens to sit bang in the middle of one of Britain's most important archaeological landscapes.

Getting here is straightforward enough - the A69 runs right through town, connecting Newcastle to Carlisle. The railway station sits on the same Newcastle-Carlisle line, making car-free visits perfectly feasible.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're within striking distance of multiple milecastles, can tackle different sections of the wall each day, and return to proper facilities rather than hunting for accommodation in every small village along the route.
