Thorpe Marsh sits just outside Goole, a sprawling wetland reserve that rewards patient birdwatchers and anyone after a proper walk away from the crowds. The landscape here is flat - genuinely flat - which means the sky dominates everything. On a good day, that's rather brilliant. You get open water, reed beds that whisper in the breeze, and the kind of light that photographers queue up for at dawn.

It's the sort of place where you slow down. Bring binoculars if you've got them. Winter brings visiting wildfowl by the thousand, while spring is when the breeding birds get vocal. Summer's quieter but the light lasts late. Walking the margins takes a couple of hours depending on how often you stop to look. The paths are flat but can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

Families with young kids might find it bit repetitive - there's no café, no facilities, no real focal point. Serious twitchers and landscape walkers will absolutely get it though. Not every walk needs to be Instagram-ready. Sometimes you just need reeds, water, and birds.
