Threlkeld Quarry Railway

A narrow-gauge railway running through an old slate quarry just outside Keswick sounds niche, and it is - but that's precisely what makes it worth an hour of your time. You're riding in heritage carriages pulled by restored engines along tracks that once hauled stone from the workings. It's industrial history you can actually experience rather than just read about behind glass.

The railway itself is the main event. Trains run for a couple of miles through the quarry landscape, and you get a proper sense of how the Victorian miners and quarrymen moved material around. The volunteers who run the place know their stuff and aren't shy about sharing it. Kids generally enjoy it - there's something compelling about small trains and steam - though the journey's short enough that younger children won't get restless.
