Tinker's Cave

The entrance to Tinker's Cave sits tucked into the hillside near Oban, a modest opening that gives little hint of what lies beyond. It's a proper working cave rather than some over-developed tourist attraction - you're genuinely exploring a natural chamber that's been used by humans for centuries. The cave itself is relatively compact, but atmospheric; bring a torch because daylight doesn't penetrate far, and the stone underfoot is slick enough to warrant decent boots.

Historically, tinkers and travellers sheltered here, which is how it earned its name. You won't find interpretive panels or guided tours - it's just you, the rock formations, and the weight of the hillside above. That's either brilliant or underwhelming depending on your mindset. Kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes or so, but it's more of a stop-off than a destination unto itself.

The real advantage of Tinker's Cave is its proximity to Oban. If you're based at Oban Holiday Park just over a mile away, or at one of the pod stays like Tanunda Pods a few miles further out, it's a straightforward leg-stretch without committing half your day. Allow thirty minutes maximum, assuming you're not crawling far into the depths. Best visited in drier weather - the cave drains poorly and winter dampness can make it properly grim. No admission charge that I'm aware of, and no facilities nearby, so come prepared. It's the sort of place that rewards curiosity rather than expectation.
