Tower Wood

Getting lost in Tower Wood, just outside York, feels properly restorative after a day wandering the city walls. This isn't a manicured woodland walk - it's the sort of place where you actually feel like you've ventured into something wild, with dense tree coverage that blocks out most of the noise from nearby roads. The canopy is thick enough that even on grey days it feels atmospheric rather than gloomy.

Paths wind through varied woodland - oak, beech, and conifers mixed together - and there's enough elevation change to make your legs feel like they've done something. It's not a brutal trek by any means, but it's more than a gentle stroll. Most people manage a decent loop in under an hour, though you could easily potter about for longer if you're not in a hurry.

Families with reasonably mobile kids will get on fine here. There's nowhere to buy food, so pack supplies if you're planning to stay a while. It's the sort of wood that rewards a bit of exploration rather than a quick march through. Autumn is particularly good when the light filters through the changing leaves.

If you're staying at The Hideaway@Baxby Manor nearby, this makes an excellent morning walk before heading into York proper. It's free to access and genuinely quieter than you'd expect for somewhere this close to a major city. That's partly why it's worth the short drive from town.
