Trebah Garden

You'll spot the entrance tucked away down a narrow lane south of Helston, and the moment you step through the gates, the whole place drops away beneath your feet. Trebah Garden tumbles down a steep ravine towards a private beach on the Helston River, and it's genuinely one of those spots that catches you off guard - you're not expecting something this dramatic tucked into rural Cornwall.

The garden itself is a proper subtropical fantasy, planted out with tree ferns, bamboo, exotic shrubs and hydrangeas that seem determined to overwhelm the paths. You're constantly walking downhill through tunnels of vegetation, and the river gets louder as you descend. By the time you reach the beach at the bottom - a hidden cove of sand and shingle - you feel like you've stumbled into somewhere private, even though there are usually other visitors around.

It's excellent for families because kids love the sense of discovery, the descent keeps them engaged, and the beach at the end feels like a proper prize. History buffs will appreciate that the garden was originally planted in the Victorian era. Allow a solid hour minimum, longer if you want to properly explore the planting or settle on the beach.

Check opening hours before you go - they're seasonal. It's not free entry, but worth the cost.
