Treburtle Wood

Walk into Treburtle Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper Cornish woodland - tall conifers mixed with native broadleaves, dappled light filtering through, the kind of place where your shoulders drop without you noticing. It's a forest that doesn't shout about itself, which is precisely why it works.

The wood sits just outside Launceston, making it an obvious afternoon detour if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks. The walking here is straightforward rather than spectacular - well-trodden paths that families with younger kids won't find exhausting, though the terrain gets a bit rooty in places. Most people spend an hour to ninety minutes wandering through, which feels about right before you've seen what the wood has to offer.

Treeburtle's strength is its accessibility and calm. There's no visitor centre, no charge as far as we can tell, just woodland as woodland should be. It's ideal for stretching your legs between attractions, or if you want something quieter than Dartmoor but still proper nature. On a wet day the trees drip nicely and smell of earth. On a dry day it's a green respite from the coast.

If you're staying at Bude Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Pencuke Farm's shepherd's huts, this wood is close enough for an evening walk before dinner. Don't expect dramatic views or rare species - expect to remember why people like forests in the first place.
