Tredilion Fruit Farm

A working fruit farm just outside Hereford that actually lets you get your hands dirty - literally. Tredilion grows everything from apples and pears to berries, and depending on the season, you can pick your own straight from the trees. It's the sort of place where you realise how little most of us know about where food actually comes from.

The farm works on a proper pick-your-own basis during harvest season, which means you turn up, grab a basket, and spend an hour or so among the trees. Kids love it - there's something deeply satisfying about filling a basket with fruit you've picked yourself, even if half of it gets eaten before you leave the farm. Adults often find it oddly therapeutic, which says something about how removed we've become from basic food production.

Timing matters here. Spring brings blossom, summer and autumn are peak picking season, and winter's quieter. Ring ahead to check what's being harvested when you visit, as opening times and what's available shifts with the seasons. Most pick-your-own farms charge a small entry fee or expect you to buy whatever you harvest, which is fair enough.

Allow a couple of hours if you're going to actually pick fruit and faff about, rather than just breeze through.
