Tudor Artillery Battery

The grassy mounds near Pevensey aren't much to look at until you realise you're standing on a 16th-century gun emplacement. The Tudor Artillery Battery is essentially an archaeological site - nothing fancy, just the earthwork remains of a fort built during Henry VIII's reign when invasion from France felt imminent. You can actually walk the perimeter and spot where the gun platforms would have been, which is oddly satisfying if you're into that sort of thing.

This is proper territory for history buffs and archaeology enthusiasts rather than casual day-trippers. Kids might get restless after twenty minutes unless they're the type to lose themselves in imagining Tudor soldiers and cannons. The site sits right near Pevensey Castle, so you could combine the two - the castle is the bigger draw, admittedly, but the battery adds another layer if you're already in the area.

There's no visitor centre or facilities on site. It's free to access and you can wander whenever you like. Allow half an hour, longer if you're the kind who reads everything. The location works well for a park-based holiday - you're minutes from Pevensey Bay Holiday Park, and if you want somewhere with better facilities, Warren Wood Country Park is just up the road. The coastal setting means you can easily combine archaeology with beach time, which softens the blow if your companions aren't as keen on earthworks as you are.
