Ulster Transport Museum

You'll need a good few hours for this one - the Ulster Transport Museum is sprawled across what feels like acres of hangar space just outside Belfast, crammed with every vehicle you can imagine. Buses, trams, trains, motorcycles, lorries - all lined up like someone's raided a transport company's entire history and decided to preserve it exactly as it was.

The railway collection is genuinely impressive. Full-size locomotives, vintage carriages you can actually walk through, and enough track to make trainspotters weep. Kids will race between the exhibits (it's a proper running-about kind of place), while anyone with a genuine interest in industrial heritage will find themselves reading plaques for hours. The road transport section is equally thorough - everything from penny-farthings to double-deckers that once rattled through Belfast's streets.

What makes it work is that it doesn't feel overly polished or sterile. These vehicles have character. You're looking at real working machines that shaped how people moved around Northern Ireland, not theoretical museum pieces.

Allow at least three hours, more if you're thorough. It's free admission, which is a genuine advantage when camping nearby at Dundonald Touring Caravan Park - just a few miles away - or The Pods at Streamvale if you fancy something more upmarket. The museum pairs well with Belfast's city attractions but works just as nicely as a rainy-day venture from a touring base. Fair warning: it can get busy with school groups, so weekday mornings are your best bet for breathing room.
