The smell of hops hits you before you've even pushed through the door at Ulverston Brewing Company. This working brewery sits just outside Grange-over-Sands, turning out proper craft ales that have become something of a fixture in Lakeland pubs. You can actually watch the brewing process - seeing massive copper vessels bubbling away while the brewers explain what's happening is genuinely interesting, even if you're not usually a beer nerd.

The taproom itself is unpretentious. No fancy gastropub nonsense here - just good beer, honest food, and locals who know what they're talking about. They do tours and tastings depending on the day, though it's worth ringing ahead to check what's on. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the full experience, including a pint or two at the bar.

For families, it's a bit mixed. Kids can tag along on the tour (some find the industrial side fascinating, others get bored after fifteen minutes), but you'll want to plan something else nearby if that's your crew. Solo drinkers and groups of mates get the most from it. The beers are genuinely good - crisp, flavourful, nothing gimmicky.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Old Park Wood or Haven Lakeland Leisure, this works as a pleasant afternoon break rather than a full day out. Grange-over-Sands itself is only a few minutes' drive, so you can easily combine it with a stroll around town or a walk up to the coast. Worth seeking out, but don't rearrange your holiday around it.
