Upper Swinhoe Lake

This reservoir sits just inland from Belford, a proper working water supply rather than a tourist attraction, but that's rather the appeal. Upper Swinhoe Lake draws walkers and bird-watchers who want something genuine - not a visitor centre with a gift shop attached.

The water itself is unremarkable on first glance, but the surrounding moorland walks reward those who venture beyond the car park. You'll find yourself among grass and gorse, with decent views back toward the coast and inland hills. A circuit takes about an hour at a reasonable pace, depending which path you take. There's no formal infrastructure here - no cafes, no signposting, no fees as far as I can tell - which means you need to come prepared.

This works best for walkers already exploring the wider area, and birdwatchers will spend proper time here with binoculars. Families with young children might find it a bit bare - there's no water's edge path or playground appeal, just landscape. Weather matters more than most places; a grey day can feel properly bleak.

It's the kind of place you'd slot into a longer walk rather than drive to specially. If you're based at South Meadows Caravan Park, Budle Bay, or any of the sites dotted around Belford, it's a decent morning or afternoon leg to stretch your legs. The real draws in this corner of Northumberland - Bamburgh Castle, the coast itself - are stronger than the lake, but it's a solid free addition to a wider itinerary.
