Vault Beach

The walk down to Vault Beach near Gorran Haven is steeper than you'd expect from the cliff path, and that's rather the point - it keeps the crowds away. You'll find a proper little cove here, backed by dramatic red-and-grey cliffs and accessible only when the tide's out, which means timing matters. The beach itself is compact, sandy with rocky outcrops, and feels genuinely remote despite being just a short drive from the village.

It's the sort of place that rewards walkers and families happy to plan around tidal windows, though young children might struggle with the descent. Swimming is possible in summer, though the water stays cold year-round. There's no facilities whatsoever - bring what you need from Gorran Haven, which is close enough to make this manageable.

What makes it work is the effort required. You won't find ice cream vans or beach bars, just stone, sand, and the Cornish sea. It's free, naturally, and costs you nothing but time and a bit of leg work. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice, arriving an hour or so before low tide if you want the full beach experience.

If you're staying at Treveague Campsite just half a mile away, this becomes an obvious morning jaunt. The nearby parks at Tregarton and Pentewan Sands put you within easy striking distance too. Worth the detour if you're the type who likes their beaches earned rather than served up with a gift shop.
