Watch House at Dodman Point

The Watch House perches on Dodman Point like a small stone sentinel, overlooking one of Cornwall's most dramatic stretches of coastline. Built in the 18th century to keep an eye out for smugglers and shipwrecks, this squat tower still commands the headland between Saint Austell and Mevagissey with proper authority.

It's not a massive attraction - you're looking at maybe twenty minutes of poking around the exterior and soaking in the views, unless you can gain access to the interior (which isn't guaranteed). What makes it worthwhile is the walk itself. The coastal path here is absolutely cracking, with sheer drops to the sea and those vast horizons that remind you why you came to Cornwall in the first place. Walkers will love the route; families with young children should be careful on the exposed sections.

The tower sits on a headland crossed by an Iron Age fort rampart, so there's proper history layered into the landscape if you fancy feeling a bit of depth. On a clear day, you can see for miles. When the weather rolls in, it turns atmospheric and moody.

Camping options nearby include Treveague just a mile away, or you could base yourself at Pentewan Sands or Heligan if you want more facilities. Saint Austell itself is close enough for supplies and a decent pasty. Spring and early summer are your best bets weather-wise, though autumn storms do create drama. It's free to visit - you're just working with what the elements throw at you.
