View Point Marker

There's a marker up here in the Herefordshire hills near Bromyard that tells you exactly where you are and what you're looking at. That's the whole thing, really - a viewpoint indicator. No admission fee, no queuing, just a brass or stone plaque that's been there long enough to matter locally.

It works best if you've actually walked to reach it. The marker itself isn't much to photograph, but the views across the Malvern Hills and towards the Welsh border are the real draw. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a grey day, well, you can tell people you've been to a viewpoint marker and leave it at that.

Hikers passing through on longer walks will appreciate the navigation aid and the excuse to stop for breath. Casual visitors from nearby caravan parks like The Rookery Woods or Wigley Orchard will find it a decent leg-stretch, though it's not the kind of place you'd spend an afternoon. Twenty minutes up, five minutes looking about, twenty minutes back. Families with young kids might find the walk harder than the destination rewards.

If you're based at one of the holiday parks dotted round Bromyard - and there are several within easy driving distance - it's worth working into a bigger walk or a morning out. Don't make a special trip for just the marker. Combine it with exploring the wider area and you've got something worth doing.
