Bromyard

Three centuries ago, hop pickers would swarm through these streets come harvest time, turning this sleepy market town into a temporary metropolis. These days Bromyard moves at a gentler pace, with its timber-framed buildings and narrow streets creating the sort of unspoilt Herefordshire atmosphere that feels increasingly rare.

The real draw here is the surrounding countryside. Lower Brockhampton Manor House stands as one of the finest examples of a medieval moated manor in the country, its black and white timber frame reflected perfectly in still waters. The National Trust site at Brockhampton includes the atmospheric ruins of a 12th-century chapel and miles of walking through Warren Wood, where ancient oaks create a proper cathedral ceiling overhead.

Edvin Loach Old Church, tucked away in the hills, rewards the short drive with Norman stonework and views that stretch across three counties. Back in town, The Walled Garden offers a more manicured escape, though the real pleasure is simply wandering Bromyard's quiet streets on a weekday morning.

The Malvern Hills rise dramatically to the east - you can see them from the View Point Marker on clear days. Worcester lies 20 miles northeast for bigger-town amenities, while Hereford is a similar distance south.

Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around the area makes perfect sense. Bromyard sits at the heart of excellent walking country, with footpaths threading between hop yards and apple orchards. You're also well placed for day trips to the Malverns or the Wye Valley, returning each evening to proper countryside quiet.
