Volgue Plantation

You'll find Volgue Plantation tucked into the landscape near Bushmills, a proper working forest that feels miles away from the tourist crowds despite being minutes from the main Causeway Coast attractions. It's woodland as it actually is here - mature trees, forest floor paths, the occasional muddy section when it's been wet. Not a manicured nature reserve with interpretation boards at every turn.

The draw is straightforward: decent walks through mixed woodland, enough trails to keep you occupied for an hour or so, and the kind of peace you don't get at Giant's Causeway or Dunluce Castle. Families with older kids will get on fine here, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes. Proper walkers appreciate it as a solid warm-up before tackling the bigger hikes around the coast.

Access is free as far as we can gather, though facilities are minimal - bring what you need. Midge season (late spring through early autumn) can be rough, so if you're visiting in summer, go when there's a breeze. Winter's actually pleasant for a quiet walk.

Stay at Causeway Country Pods just 2.8 miles away and you've got a proper forest spot that complements the famous monuments without the ticket prices. It works well as a morning walk before heading to the Causeway or Dark Hedges - gives you that sense of what the landscape actually does when left to itself.
