Walking Madonna

Carved into the limestone cliffs above Bakewell, this medieval relief of the Virgin Mary and Child has been watching over the Derbyshire countryside for centuries. The Walking Madonna gets its name from the figure's flowing robes, which give the impression of movement despite being hewn from solid rock.

Reaching it requires a proper walk up steep paths from the town centre - allow at least an hour return if you're reasonably fit. The carving itself is weathered but still clearly visible, tucked into a natural alcove that would have provided shelter for pilgrims centuries ago.
