Lees Moor

Standing at 425 metres above sea level, this modest Peak District summit offers proper panoramic views across Derbyshire's rolling countryside without the crowds that flock to Kinder Scout or Bleaklow. The walk up from Bakewell takes about an hour through typical moorland terrain - think heather, gritstone outcrops, and the occasional grouse startling you from the undergrowth.

Walkers with decent fitness will appreciate the straightforward route, though it's not really one for families with young children given the boggy patches and lack of clear paths in places. The views stretch south towards Matlock and east across the White Peak limestone plateau. On a clear day, you can make out the distinctive profile of Mam Tor in the distance.

What makes Lees Moor particularly appealing is its relative obscurity. While everyone else queues for car parks at Chatsworth or Haddon Hall, you'll likely have this summit largely to yourself. The moorland can be bleak in winter but comes alive with purple heather in late summer.

For those staying at nearby holiday parks like Darwin Forest or Peak Pods, it's a decent morning's exercise before exploring Bakewell's famous pudding shops. Allow three hours return from the town centre, and pack waterproofs - Peak District weather changes faster than you can say 'Bakewell tart'.
