Wallis's Spinney

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, Wallis's Spinney sits just outside Kettering and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Northamptonshire forest - quiet paths, birdsong, and enough space to actually breathe. The spinney itself is compact enough that you won't spend hours getting lost, but substantial enough that it doesn't feel rushed.

Trees here are the main event. Mature woodland with good cover means damp earth underfoot even on dry days, so proper boots matter. The canopy is thick enough to keep things cool in summer, which visitors with small children often appreciate - no baking in the sun. Families wanting a solid hour of rambling will find enough here; it's not the sort of place where boredom sets in after twenty minutes.

If you're based at Northfield Farm or Lakeview Caravan Park nearby, this works brilliantly as an easy morning or afternoon slot without needing to drive far. A couple of hours covers it comfortably, depending on your pace and whether you stop to watch for woodland birds.

The spinney isn't flashy. There are no visitor facilities that we're aware of, and parking is basic. But that's rather the point - it's functional woodland, the kind locals use regularly, without the crowds or infrastructure demands of bigger country estates. Worth the detour if you're after genuine quiet rather than a showpiece experience.
